Golf Cart Tour of Grand Turk Island

Some cruise ports are just a stop on the itinerary. Grand Turk? Grand Turk is a whole experience — and if you do it right, it becomes one of those port days you talk about long after the ship has sailed.

I've done my share of Caribbean ports. I've taken the tour buses, followed the guides with the little flags, and sat in the air-conditioned vans while someone narrated the island through a microphone. And listen — there's nothing wrong with that. But when I tell you that renting a golf cart in Grand Turk completely changed how I experience a port day? I mean every single word of that.

In my latest video on Sip, Sail & Sass, I'm taking you along for a full 20-minute golf cart tour of Grand Turk Island. No agenda. No schedule. No rushing back to meet the group. Just salty air, open roads, Caribbean blue water stretching as far as the eye can see — and a cast of characters on four legs that absolutely nobody warned me about. 🫏

🌴 Why Grand Turk Deserves More Than a Beach Chair

Most people step off the ship at Grand Turk, walk to the beach at the cruise port, grab a drink, and call it a day. And while that beach is genuinely lovely, you are leaving so much of this island unseen.

Grand Turk is the capital island of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and it carries centuries of history in its salt flats, its colonial architecture, and its laid-back local culture. It's small enough to cover in a few hours but rich enough that you'll wish you had more time. The moment you get behind the wheel of a golf cart and head away from the port, the real Grand Turk reveals itself — and it is worth every minute.

🗺️ What We Cover on the Tour:

🚢 Leaving the Cruise Port We kick things off right at the port and hit the road immediately. One of the things I love most about Grand Turk is how quickly you transition from the cruise ship atmosphere into the actual island. Within minutes, you're on open roads with the ocean on one side and the island life unfolding in front of you.

🫏 The Donkeys — Yes, Really Let me go ahead and address this early because it is absolutely a highlight whether you plan for it or not. Grand Turk has wild donkeys. They roam freely. They are unbothered. They have zero concern for your golf cart, your schedule, or your personal space — and they are absolutely delightful. We encountered them multiple times throughout the tour, and every single time it was a moment. If you are an animal lover, prepare yourself. You will want to bring one home. 🫏😂

🏛️ The Grand Turk Lighthouse This is a must-stop. The Grand Turk Lighthouse dates back to the 1850s and sits at the northern tip of the island. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in Turks and Caicos, and standing near it with that view of the Atlantic Ocean behind you is genuinely breathtaking. It's the kind of spot that reminds you why you travel in the first place. Bring your camera. Take all the photos. You'll thank yourself later.

🏖️ The Beach Areas Grand Turk is surrounded by some of the most stunning water in the Caribbean. The beaches along the western shore are calm, clear, and that impossible shade of turquoise that makes you question whether it's real. We cruise past several beautiful stretches of beach on the tour, and I'll be honest — more than once I was tempted to just park the cart and stay forever.

🏘️ Local Town Streets This is the part of the tour that I think most cruise passengers miss entirely, and it is one of my favorites. The local streets of Cockburn Town — the capital — are lined with colorful colonial buildings, small local shops, and the kind of quiet, authentic Caribbean charm that you simply cannot find at the cruise port. Driving through those streets felt like stepping into a postcard that hasn't been over-touristed yet. Treasure that while it lasts.

💭 Final Thoughts from the Road We wrap up the tour with my honest take on Grand Turk, what surprised me most, and why I would absolutely do this exact itinerary again on every future visit.

✨ Tips for Renting a Golf Cart in Grand Turk

Since I know you're already planning your port day in your head right now, here are a few practical tips to make your golf cart experience smooth and stress-free:

  • Rent early. Carts go fast when multiple ships are in port. Head straight from the ship to the rental area and secure yours first thing.
  • Bring cash. Some rental operators prefer cash, and it never hurts to have it on hand for local shops and food stops along the way.
  • Give yourself at least 3–4 hours. You can technically do a quick loop in 2 hours, but you'll want time to stop, explore, and yes — properly appreciate the donkeys.
  • Wear sunscreen. Seriously. You are in open air, under full Caribbean sun, with the breeze making you think you're cooler than you are. Protect that skin, Queen Boss Lady. ☀️
  • Stay aware of your all-aboard time. The freedom of the golf cart is glorious, but that ship will sail without you. Set a phone alarm if you need to.
  • Take the northern route to the lighthouse. It is worth every mile.

💬 The Bottom Line

Grand Turk will surprise you if you let it. It is not the flashiest port on your itinerary. There is no giant shopping district or elaborate resort strip. What it has is authenticity, natural beauty, history, and a pace of life that reminds you to slow down and actually be where you are.

Rent the cart. See the lighthouse. Wave at the donkeys. Drive those local streets.

And then come back here and tell me in the comments — did the donkeys steal your heart too? 🫏🖤
